Around Christmas, I saw an ad for a tiny-home-cabin in the North Georgia mountains. I immediately thought this would be a perfect present for Cody! (I love gifting experiences, whether it be a night in a hotel, a voucher for a cool activity, or a surprise trip.) I booked a one night cabin with Getaway for the end of January.
So, we had both been looking forward to this weekend for a while! Every January, we have at least one night away to reconnect as a couple and dream into the new year. I highly recommend doing this! Not only is it a great way to kick off the year, but I’ve found that making it a tradition has been an easy way to prioritize our relationship and intentionally choose each other. (All the heart emoji’s.)
I wanted to share a little bit of our experience at Getaway Cabins!
LOCATION
Getaway hosts cabin sites all over the US, and Georgia is one of them! Located about 30 minutes north of Dahlonega, these micro-cabins sit high in hills of Suches, GA. The last 15 miles of traveling into the property were winding up and down mountain roads. If you get carsick, just be prepared for this. I didn’t mind it too much, it reminded me of some country roads where I grew up, and I thought it was actually really beautiful. (But still a little like a driving obstacle course.)
ACCOMMODATION
I am definitely a “glamper”, and find no enjoyment with roughing it in nature. Although their intention as a brand is to help you disconnect with the hustle of everyday life and connect with nature, they had creature comforts like A/C, enough hot water for a relaxing shower, and dependable electricity. It felt more like a minimal tiny home rather than a forest shack.
This company has major hospitality skills. From their website, to non-robot customer service, we felt that we had a good idea of what to expect upon arrival and were not disappointed! They had basic kitchen cookware, clean linens, campfire starters, and provisions for sale like any other hotel room we’d stay at. When we arrived there was a complimentary smores kit and activity booklet to help us unplug. We brought snacks and our french press for the morning and were set!
PRIVACY
A few days before check-in we were sent a map of the property and our cabin number. At this site, there were 30 cabins separated by at least 50 – 150 feet. We were able to see our neighbors, but everyone had enough room to feel comfortable. It wasn’t complete isolation, but personally, I prefer that in case of an emergency. Every cabin had a fire pit and guests are encouraged to keep a peaceful, quiet environment. There’s no front desk or keys, instead we received a keypad code for our cabin an hour before check-in.
ACTIVITIES
From the cabins, you’re at least 30 minutes from any town. We definitely will plan to bring dinner with us next time- after check-in we headed back towards Dahlonega since the only general store / restaurant nearby had closed earlier in the day than expected. But no big deal! Our intention was to enjoy the cabin, read, and relax anyway. If you do want to have a fuller itinerary, there’s nearby hiking trails, a few wineries in the surrounding area, and small-town tourist attractions within an hour’s travel.
INVESTMENT
I was pleasantly surprised when I went to book on their website! With taxes and fees it was still under $100. Prices do vary by day of the week, holidays and promotional times, but are all still very affordable considering the unique stay that it is.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Getaway Georgia and would absolutely return. If you’re wanting to plan an affordable weekend away, I highly recommend this modern cabin rental!
